Moles on Face

Moles on face or any part of the body is a very common issue. A benign skin growth that is commonly brown or black in color is often known as a mole. Moles can occur in any part of the body. These moles are commonly found on the face.

When the moles happen on the face, they make the person look unattractive and can also turn into skin cancer. This is one of the main reasons why moles need to be treated. But before we understand the process of treating the moles, let us understand why moles are caused.

Causes of Moles on Face

Moles get formed when the skin cells develop and get accumulated on the epidermis instead. People who are sensitive to the sun’s rays can also develop moles with time. And sometimes there can be genetic reasons behind the formation of moles over the skin. In some of the patients who have moles, a dysplastic or irregular mole can be an indication of melanoma or skin cancer.

Types of Moles on Face

There are different types of moles that have different histories and can be caused by different reasons. Two of the main types of moles are mentioned for you below.

1. Congenital Naevi

Congenital Naevi are the type of moles that are present on the child’s body by birth. They are small in size and not very dense.

2. Dysplastic Naevi

Dysplastic Naevi are different from Congenital moles. They are bigger in size and darker in color. Patients with these types of moles are more prone to developing melanoma than patients with Congenital moles.

How To Get Rid of Moles on Face

No matter what type of mole a person has, it is important that the patient must consult a dermatologist before proceeding with the treatment. The doctor can advise the type of procedure that will give the patient their ideal outcome. For example, people with increased moles generally go through shave removal while people who have apartment moles are suggested to go through excision.

Now that we know about the kinds of moles let us understand how they can be treated. There are generally two ways in which the moles can be treated.

  • Shave Excision
  • Surgical Excision

1. Shave Excision

This is one of the most common ways in which dermatologists treat moles. In Shave Excision, the physician uses a scalpel to remove the mole. Shave excision is usually used for moles that are not very big and are slightly under the skin.

Once the mole is removed an electric tool is used to burn off the region and prevent any infection or formation of the mole. The wound is then dressed with a sterile dressing to kill all the germs. Once the treatment is complete the patient can take a discharge immediately.

2. Surgical Excision

This type of surgery is also known as full-thickness excision. In surgical excision, the mole is completely removed from the roots. This surgery is performed over general anesthesia and takes less time too. In surgical excision, the fat under the first layer of the skin is removed which helps in the permanent removal of the mole as well.

A machine is used to cut circular portions from the skin. For the moles with more than 8mm of length, a punch excision is preferred. Once the surgery is performed and the mole is removed then the wound is sterilized and cleaned to avoid any infections. The wound is then covered with a protective bandage that helps the patient recover quickly.

After the surgery is complete, the patient might feel a little discomfort. However, with time and regular follow-ups, the wound will heal and the patient will be able to return to his or her normal routine. There are some precautions that the patient must take to ensure a quick recovery.

Make sure to change the bandage after every 2-3 days.

  • Do not scratch or stretch the affected skin surface as it can be painful.
  • Do not use dirty or sweaty hands over the skin surface and try to keep it away from water as well.
  • Avoid exposure to the sun.

These are the main precautions that a patient must take post-surgery. After about a week of treatment, most of the patients can easily get back to their normal life.

Mole Removal Cost

The cost of mole removal in clinics can vary depending on the place and clinics. In the United States, it may cost from 200$ to 1500$. The mole removal cost in India usually varies from Rs. 15000 to Rs. 25000.
